As we shared with you in an earlier post, insulating your hot water heater can help minimize energy loss. Adding a blanket can reduce standby losses by up to 45 percent. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, adding water heater insulation can save you from 4 to 9 percent on your utility bill.

You can pick up an insulating blanket at the home and garden store. These blankets are held in place using straps or tape. Before you head to the store, note the size in gallons and height of your specific water heater. For a fully insulated electric water heater, look for a blanket that covers the top of the heater. If your heater runs from the gas line, insulation is different. You cannot cover the top of the tank or the vents. You may need the help of an expert to ensure safe installation.

Pay close attention to the directions and do not cover up the thermostat pane. After you are done, turn your thermostat down to 130 degrees F to avoid damaging the wire. Greater savings may come from turning the heater down to 120 degrees F. The lower temperature will minimize hard water scaling, which can make your water harder to heat.

It’s not often that we come across the death of a water heater and it’s corresponding funeral on a blog, so we thought it would be fun to share it with you.

“In a towel, a purple shower cap, and pink & green flip flops I dash down stairs. Splash. Water everywhere.

My water heater committed suicide and I was furious.

Who knew the funeral service of a water heater would be so expensive. Trip to Homewood Home Depot. Cost: $309 for a replacement, $125 for delivery, tax and $45 for installation (Thank God that I knew someone that knew someone for a discount). At least they were pleasant as they took all my money.”

We wish all the best to Rachel and her new water heater!

The Ohio Department of Development, which received $18 million in federal stimulus money to weatherize homes, neglected to inspect the completed work to ensure proper installation. Of the required 5%, a state audit found that only .5% of homes were inspected.

Community Action Partnership of Greater Dayton was responsible for overseeing work completed in Montgomery, Greene, Butler, Warren, Preble and Darke counties.

The weatherization work provided up to $6,500 in hot-water upgrades and insulation to homes of low-income occupants. Rather than invest in quality, the Ohio Department of Development paid for shoddy work that was then re-done on multiple occasions. Money that was misspent by the organization, totaling $630,000, has been ordered to be repaid.

Another $.5 million still remains to be spent on the program before its expiration in March of next year. The program will continue to help keep people warm while saving them money on their energy bills.

Did you know if you have a point-of-use water heater under your sink you can brew a cup of tea? It can create a flow of 170 degree F hot water. This device is small and can fit inside a cabinet or a closet. These dedicated heaters are meant to serve only one sink, faucet or shower. These point-of-use tankless heaters are less expensive than whole house unit.

When considering a point-of-use tankless water heater, think about water flow rate, incoming water temperature and the activation flow rate. Usually these heaters are dedicated to bathroom sinks, dishwashers and showers as well as larger items like washing machines. Do you have a point-of-use water heater in your home? Where is it and what do you use it for? Tweet us: @intellihot

Check out DSIRE, the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency.

DSIRE was established in 1995 and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy as “a comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility and federal incentives and policies that promote renewable energy and efficiency.” It is an ongoing project of the North Carolina Solar Center and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council.

The database is easy to use. You just click your state on the interactive map, and it will pull up all available information. For example, when you click Illinois, where Intellihot is located, it pulls up state and local financial incentives; rules, regulations and policies; and related programs and initiatives.

DSIRE keeps it easy to remain abreast on changes to policies and incentives by click on it’s What’s New tab.
